Energy Efficient Small Refrigerators
When it comes to saving energy, it is the small things that make the biggest difference. The most common and easiest thing anyone looking to buy the best small refrigerator for energy efficiency is by look for an energy star label. There are other things to consider that can significantly improve energy consumption but most people are too lazy or do not know enough about this area to properly find an energy smart appliance. This is why energy star is such a popular and effective way to identify appliances that will not waste.
Every energy star compliant appliance will come with a yellow label indicating the amount of energy consumption relative to a comparable non-energy star device. It will also give you the estimate annual cost of operation.
Buying an adequately sized small refrigerator for your purpose without going overboard is always a good idea. A larger refrigerator means more space will need to be cooled and unused space is a great waster. Also, for units with a freezer compartment, it is always a good idea to look for a top mounted freezer which is much more efficient than a bottom mounted unit.
Another thing to consider is the thermostat. While most refrigerators still come with the standard knob with numbered dials, keep in mind that while a more advanced model might cost more if it comes with a digital thermostat, the cost savings in energy use will be worth it in the long run. Digital thermostats are much more accurate and can therefore provide a more accurate temperature control. Over cooling the refrigeration space is another way to waste energy.
For those who do not require additional features such as an ice makers or door mounted dispenser in larger units, remember that these special functions are also very energy inefficient. Unless there is reason why you would need it more times than not an icemaker is a luxury that most people don’t even use.
