A Gun Cabinet is the Ultimate in Functional Furniture
Just so we’re clear, when I say gun cabinet, I’m not referring to the ugly pieces of steel that Homak and Stack On brands manufacture, although they certainly have their place in home security, I think it’s a bit of a stretch referring to them as furniture. What I’m talking about when I say gun cabinet is a piece of handmade wooden quality that you’d be proud to use to show off your firearms collection.
Before I get carried away with the beauty of a well made gun cabinet, I think it’s important that I mention first what you’re getting into should you choose to purchase one of these fine pieces of furniture…I should really say, who’s getting into the cabinet when you display it. See, one of these will almost certainly prevent your children from gaining unwanted access, but for a burglar, you can kiss those guns goodbye. All that they need to do is break the glass and have a free for all. That said, if you choose to display a gun cabinet, see to it that you have a solid security system installed, and that you keep it out of display from windows and any other place in your home that may be interpreted as an invitation.
You can find gun cabinets in nearly any shooting or outdoors store – my grocery store even carries them. These are typically pretty nice looking on the surface, and relatively inexpensive. There’s nothing really wrong with say, a Scout gun cabinet. Scout is one of the leading producers in firearms cabinetry, but I like to think of these as works of art. I prefer to have mine custom made with high quality craftsmanship and materials. If you’re really serious, consult local woodworkers or go online to find folks who specialize in such art. Tom over at HandcraftedTraditions.com, for instance, does some incredible work. If you have firearms in the house, and you just hate to lock them up behind a steel wall, show em’ off a little with a custom made wooden gun cabinet.
