Bathroom Medicine Cabinets: An Integral Part Of Your Bathroom Design

Bathroom medicine cabinets are an important part of your bathroom. It not only holds important toiletries and medicine, but is generally the place where you prepare yourself to face the day. Most of us don’t consider style when we think of a medicine cabinet, but it is also an integral part of the design of the room. As such, it is imperative that it match the style of the bathroom.

Installing the Medicine Cabinet Yourself

Medicine cabinets come in two basic styles and are relatively easy to install yourself. Before installing your cabinets there are a few things to take into account.

1- Although it seems basic, first you must decide where you want to place the cabinet. Generally a medicine cabinet is hung over the vanity with the sink. But there are some instances when another location makes more sense.
2- Next, consider who will be using the bathroom. If it is a shared room, you will need to take into account the height of each person using the room.

The first type of medicine cabinet is the type that you install as you would a picture. It will be necessary to locate the studs within the wall and attach the hardware to them to give the cabinet the stability it needs for constant use.

The second type of medicine cabinet is a recessed or partially recessed cabinet. This cabinet is set directly into the wall between the studs and takes a little bit more time and knowledge to hang correctly.

To install a recessed medicine cabinet it is first necessary to locate the studs and measure the space between them. Building codes have changed over the years and the space between the studs will vary depending on when and where your home was built. Once you have the exact dimensions you can purchase your cabinet and begin the process of installing it.

Make a template of the back of the cabinet out of paper and attach it to the wall where you want your cabinet to hang. Use this template and a keyhole saw to cut out the space for the cabinet. Follow the manufacturer’s directions when installing the hardware to support the cabinet.

By taking the time to consider the options, your bathroom medicine cabinet can be much more than just a place to store stuff—it can enhance the style and design of your room.
